This week at Rotary - guest speaker Jeff Furmanchin

Rotary International has added PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT to the list of our core values. One of the most important messages on this topic is "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle"!

Protection of the environment goes hand-in-hand with other traditional Rotary pillars of health and clean water. Recycling in 2021 isn't just bins for old newspapers anymore. State of the art technology includes mixed stream recycling, flexible plastic packaging recycling, public drop-off centers for e-waste, and many more innovations.

J.P.Mascaro's is at the forefront of this technology, even implementing a new pilot program here in Pottstown. Our speaker, Jeff Furchinman, General Manager at Mascaros' new division TotalRecycling, Inc in Birdsboro will be talking about what his company is doing and will answer your questions on this vital topic. Mascaro's serves a number of municipalities by exclusive municipal contract and is also available directly to many other residents.

Guaranteed to be a relevant and informative evening.

Please note - we are planning to continue with a hybrid meeting format.  For hybrid meetings we are aiming for a minimum of 20 in-person attendees in order to support the meeting logistics.  For those comfortable to attend in person, masking and social distancing rules will be followed although relaxed if you are vaccinated.  Registration is required for in-person attendance so that we can plan meals. Register here if you have not done so.

Richard Whittaker Memorial Bridge ribbon cutting
Monday, September 20th is the Grand Opening of the new pedestrian and bicycle bridge over Route 724 in Union Township, along the Schuylkill River Trail.
Please join fellow Rotarian, Peggy Whittaker to celebrate the opening of the Richard P Whittaker, MD Memorial Bridge with a Ribbon Cutting at 11:00am.
The bridge is located on Route 724 in Douglassville, but you must access the trail to get to the bridge.
A group will be riding bikes from Pottstown to the ribbon cutting, leaving at 10:00am.  We will travel together at a relaxed pace so no worries about being left behind.  It is about 7 miles each way, flat, hard packed gravel.
Bill Brogley has offered to provide some pre-ride snacks at his office prior to ride departure.  His office is located at 18 S Charlotte St Pottstown, PA 19464. Parking is free in the municipal lot across the street.  If you plan to ride with us, please email me so we know to expect you.  I can also be reached at 215-740-5206, call or text.
Rotarians who are not riding are welcome to park at Fork and Ale 1281 E Main St, Douglassville, PA 19518.  From Fork and Ale, it’s about a 3/4 mile walk to the bridge.  A golf cart shuttle will be available from 10:00am-10:40am for those that need it.  If you need to take the shuttle, it is first come, first served so leave some extra time.
There will be light refreshments available back at Fork and Ale after the ribbon cutting.
Contact me with any questions or concerns!

Yours in Rotary

Your help will keep us growing!

Our club is evolving and we are looking to pass the baton on some key events.  WE NEED YOU!

Christmas Party
Each year our Past President Kirsten Gieseler and current co- chair of our fellowship committee organizes an incredible Christmas Party for our club and community.  She is extremely busy with Rotary activities at the District level as Len will be next year's District Governor and has thrown up her hand for support.  Kirsten has always had a great talent for fellowship and this particular event is very special as we combine holiday celebration, fellowship, with giving to our community.  If you are interested in helping with this year's Christmas Party planning, we would love to have your support.  Please reach out to Amira Heim, Kirsten's co-chair, at amira_heim@yahoo.com.

Annual 4th of July Duck Race
We can't thank our veteran Duck Race organizers, Jean Spotts and Robin Smith, enough for their years of dedication and supporting this event that makes such a difference to non-profits in our community and is a fun event enjoyed by all.  They've got a well-tested process in place and are just looking for a few hands to help step in to take over and keep moving forward.  Robin will be presenting her succession plans at an upcoming meeting and we would love to have your support.  Many hands make light work!

4-way Test Speech Contest
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Each spring we host talented high school students from local school districts for the 4-way test speech contest.  It never ceases to amaze me the range of topics and the thoughtful, nuanced speeches these students present.  We are forming a committee to help organize the club-level event and would love your help!  If you would be interested in supporting this important event under the Youth Services area of service, please contact Amy Marazas at amy@amymarazas.com.

Come be part of our great projects and events and use your superpowers to help grow and support our club!

Yours in Rotary,
Nicole Matz

Hoagie Sale to promote Halloween Parade

The Pottstown Halloween parade has been scheduled for this Saturday, October 23rd at 12 PM.
Once again, Rotary will support the event, so we are conducting the Ice House hoagie ticket fundraiser to help cover the costs.

Tickets are $8 each and are valid from September 1st through November 30th.

This fundraiser is really a win-win-win. Rotary raises the funds to help the tradition of the parade to continue.
You get a great deal because hoagies are normally $ 9.95 if you buy them directly from Ice House and we are supporting a local business.
What's not to like about all of that goodness?!

Please contact Lauren McCloskey or Rick Gray to get your tickets.

Have a wonderful day!
Lauren McCloskey

Purple Pinkie Race 2021

==========================================================================

A special note from our District Governor:

We District 7430 Rotarians want to finish the polio eradication job begun in 1985.  The best way to fund the vaccines needed is to give generously through the Yvette Palmer Purple Pinkie Race to Zero.
Please join us on October 2, 2021 by registering on the link provided through the District website Race to Zero - Fight Polio | District 7430 (rotarydistrict7430.org) or directly on Facebook at:

You can participate in the 5K run/walk, ride a bicycle, and have children walk in the 1-miler.  If you prefer, join us at the Octoberfest for music, German food and beverages.  Learn more from our video at this you.tube link  https://youtu.be/H2wZane2Jn8

All events will take place at the Schnecksville Community Fairgrounds.
I thank you for your support and look forward to having fun "doing good" with you!
