POLIO PLUS program & Rotary Aid to World Health

Join us this Wednesday for a program by Pennsylvania Rotarians who are polio survivors as they discuss the Rotary Polio Plus program. Fittingly, this meeting is just four days in advance of 2021 World Polio Day on Oct 24.

Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for over 35 years, and our goal of ridding the earth of this disease is in sight. We started in 1979 with vaccinations for 6 million children in the Philippines. Today, Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only countries where polio remains endemic.

Even if you know about polio and its history, this program will describe updated information on the comparisons between "Post-Polio Syndrome" or "Late Effects of Polio",  and the recent recognition of  "Long-Haul Covid". Learn about the "plus"  in PolioPlus, and the status of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI)

No member in our Club is too young to have avoided knowing about someone or hearing stories about family members who were afflicted with polio, and the introduction of the miracle vaccines around the world. Many of us are old enough to remember the actual tears and fear.

Please note - we are planning to continue with a hybrid meeting format.  For hybrid meetings we are aiming for a minimum of 20 in-person attendees in order to support the meeting logistics.  For those comfortable to attend in person, masking and social distancing rules will be followed although relaxed if you are vaccinated.  Registration is required for in-person attendance so that we can plan meals. Register here if you have not done so.

Social hour starts at 5:30 pm with dinner and presentation at 6:30 pm at Brookside Country Club.

For those who wish to see the presentation from a Zoom meeting, your login information is below:

Halloween Parade preparation
The Pottstown Community Halloween parade will be held this Saturday, Oct. 23, beginning at noon.  It is sponsored by our Rotary Club, AMBUCS, and the Pottstown Dept. of Parks & Recreation.

Steve Smith needs help to decorate the float.  If you can help, please meet him at the Roller Mills on Industrial Blvd. at 9:30 am Saturday morning.

If you want to walk in the parade or ride on the float, please meet on High St near the Goodwill Fire Co. at 11:45 am.  It will be more fun if you come in costume.  The parade will last about one hour ending at York St.

Deb Penrod could use some help in organizing the participants before the parade.  Please meet her at 9:30 in front of the Goodwill Fire Co.
Please email Deb or me if you can help.

Eric Mitchell
It is with great sadness to announce that we have lost another longtime Rotarian Eric Mitchell.

Eric joined the club in December of 1999 and was President 2005-2006.   Eric was the catalyst behind and the first President of the Pottstown Rotary Club Endowment Fund (PRCEF).   Eric worked for Boenning and Scattergood as a Stock Broker for many years until developing Alzheimers.

Eric passed away on Sunday October 3rd of complications of his Alzheimers.   He was 66 years old.   Please keep his wife Leslie and their family in your thoughts and prayers.

Yours in Rotary,

Nicole Matz

New member applications in October

We’ve received several new member applications and the following people have been approved for membership in our club by the board of directors.

Jamie Sanchez lives here in Pottstown and currently helps with Pottstown Community Action.  She is a member of the Pottstown Land Bank.  You may have already talked to her at some of our meetings.

S. Suzanne Grace is also an owner and operator of High Street Steaks, 300 E. High St, Pottstown.  Once again, we hope you took time to meet and greet her at the Mixer.  She is sponsored by Bill Brogley.

Other people are soliciting for membership in our Service Club – as is the case with
Linda Anthony.  She is the founder and CEO of Las Desserts here in Pottstown.  But because of time constraints, she would like to help out with activities that involve community outreach and our Service Club “fits the bill.”

And similarly, Jenna Armato would like to join the Service Club.  She is another Pottstown resident who would like to help out in our community.

Also, Geri Zaccaria is the owner and operator of Barristers Bagels here in Pottstown.  You hopefully had a chance to talk to her at our B2B Mixer event and she too would like to help out through the Service Club.

This is the second posting of their applications.  Please seek them out, introduce yourself to them and them to Rotary.

Hoagie Sale to promote Halloween Parade

The Pottstown Halloween parade has been scheduled for this Saturday, October 23rd at 12 PM.
Once again, Rotary will support the event, so we are conducting the Ice House hoagie ticket fundraiser to help cover the costs.

Tickets are $8 each and are valid from September 1st through November 30th.

This fundraiser is really a win-win-win. Rotary raises the funds to help the tradition of the parade to continue.
You get a great deal because hoagies are normally $ 9.95 if you buy them directly from Ice House and we are supporting a local business.
What's not to like about all of that goodness?!

Please contact Lauren McCloskey or Rick Gray to get your tickets.

Have a wonderful day!
Lauren McCloskey
